CKH Success Story: John Goss Delivers Significant Savings for Client
At CKH Group, our commitment to excellence and client success is a cornerstone of our values. We are thrilled to share a recent success story that exemplifies this dedication and highlights the exceptional talent we bring to our team. Recently, our newest Tax Principal, John Goss, made a remarkable impact by uncovering a significant anomaly that resulted in substantial savings for one of our clients.
About John Goss
John Goss, who joined CKH with over twenty years of extensive experience in indirect tax, has already proven to be an invaluable asset. His impressive background includes tenures at Big 4 public accounting firms and notable global companies such as Newell Brands. With his deep expertise in tax law and business operations, John has been instrumental in enhancing our tax compliance and advisory services.
John Goss Saves Client Thousands
In a recent engagement with one of our clients—a prominent manufacturer and distributor of consumer goods in the United States—John demonstrated his keen analytical skills and industry knowledge. During routine collaboration between our sales tax compliance team and the client, we identified unusual activity that warranted further investigation. Specifically, we noticed a spike in use tax in one state followed by a corresponding spike in sales tax in another state in the subsequent reporting period.
With this insight, John meticulously analyzed the situation and discovered a significant overpayment of use tax that had occurred due to a misunderstanding of tax obligations related to promotional giveaways. The client had withdrawn inventory items for use as promotional giveaways at a tradeshow. Typically, items withdrawn from inventory for such purposes are subject to use tax in the state where they are utilized. However, after the tradeshow, the remaining inventory was shipped to one of the client’s outlet stores in a different state, where it was sold at retail, and sales tax was collected and remitted.
The client initially viewed these transactions as separate and unrelated. However, John recognized an opportunity to recover the use tax associated with the inventory that was ultimately sold. His expert analysis revealed that while the “accrue on withdrawal” approach is a standard practice for normal sales promotions, it did not apply in this case. The inventory, still available for sale after the tradeshow, should not have been subject to use tax.
John’s attention to detail and proactive approach led to significant financial relief for our client. By leveraging his industry knowledge and understanding of tax regulations, he was able to save the client thousands of dollars. This success story highlights not only John Goss’s exceptional capabilities but also the high standards and client-centric values that define CKH Group.
